DISCOVERED Art Party — Call For Artists

Save the Date for DISCOVERED: An Art Party with a Cause, on Friday, September 27, 2013 as part of this year’s STL Design Week. With the theme of children’s literacy in mind, AIGA Saint Louis’ Design-for-a-Cause event partners with the newly renovated downtown St. Louis Public Library to present 40 selected artists and designers who will exhibit and auction their donated artwork reinterpreting and repurposing used books, to benefit the St. Louis Public Library Foundation. Live music, bar, hors d’oeuvres, live letterpress printing and kids area on site.

40 Artists will be chosen to transform old books into a one-of-a-kind piece of Art. Apply now!

Call for Artists

Artists, we want you to apply to be a part of the show. If selected, your donated artwork will be displayed in the gorgeous and newly renovated Great Hall of the Central Public Library downtown, among other curated works. Each piece will:

  • Include a reused book somehow (we will provide one if you like). Ripped pages, collaging, carving into the book, soaking the pages, ripping off the cover, etc. are some examples of encouraged book manipulation.
  • Either easily hang on a nail on a wall or fit comfortably on a small pedestal.

This will be a curated show. In order to apply to be a participating artist, we ask you submit either a link to an online portfolio or a PDF showing a sufficient amount of past work. A couple sentences about a specific idea for the piece you have are welcomed. Download form.

A judges’ panel will look through your application and determine a final body of work that contains approximately 40 pieces featuring a variety of artist working with different mediums and backgrounds. Applications must be submitted no later than July 15. The judges will announce the names of participating artists on July 22.

Selected artists will be invited to a special private tour of the newly renovated Central. The exclusive tour will focus on the design and architecture, as well as an overview of the St. Louis Public Library Foundation, to use as possible inspiration for your work.

We are privileged to announce our judges, who will curate the artist selection. Our esteemed judges:

John Hendrix: Illustrator, Professor at Washington University in St. Louis
Carlos Zamora: Illustrator & Designer, Senior Designer at Kiku Obata
Scott Matthews: Illustrator, Art Director at The Tremendousness Collective
