Workshop: Typographic Lettering – Making Marks Custom

This workshop is an introduction and deep dive into how to take a digital typefaces and customize them to make custom word marks. We’ll look at both digital and analogue techniques, discuss the initial choice of typographic model, play with tracing paper and Illustrator, and have fun with letters. Participants will leave with a new understanding of manipulating stock type to make it custom lettering.

About Ben
Ben Kiel is co-founder of XYZ Type (xyztype.com), a retail type foundry based in Saint Louis and Brooklyn. He also runs Typefounding (typefounding.com), which provides custom lettering, typefaces, and typographic technical services. Because running two companies seems to be not enough, he also is an adjunct professor at Washington University in Saint Louis, teaching typography.
